On 25 May, a beautiful sunny day when Dove Meadow was bright with buttercups, eight members of Artists' Book Club Dove were delighted to welcome new member Camilla Nelson, a very accomplished multidisciplinary book-artist. Do have a look at her website.
After a show-and-tell and wide-ranging discussion, we were guided by Judith through Claire Van Vliet's complex and demanding 'Beauty in Use' binding.
May Dove-droppings
an explosion of mermaids
you can almost see it from here
eight mermaids dreaming of the sea
the Wild Kaiser and the Tame Kaiser
they carved up Europe but forgot Bavaria
they cook in Germany and eat in Austria
she's handy with cardboard
180 paintings in the cellar
the Nazis didn't find them
reverse piano-hinge
see through to the next bit
and to the one before
I didn't know where I was going
to move through the book
walking through the air dreaming
different size pages
sit there and twiddle
upside down
you start in the middle
with dried-up dandelion stems
lung-scars of aliens
the rag-sorters of Ivybridge
jumping down every rabbit-hole
in a private library
another crinoline accident
fires and bankruptcies
the mill-owners hanged themselves
a protest book about nothing
muddle up the chapters
for a bridge into something
tangled together
the thread and the trace
looking after the Albion press
a nipping press
and a Remington typewriter
pulling in different directions
playing the piano in railway stations
he sang but not real words
the book being fully consumed
nothing but mouse-droppings
the head and the tail
the humming of the light
I was unable to be at the meeting on 15 June, when Diana introduced the 'Spider book' structure, but Clare kindly gathered the Droppings!
June Dove Droppings (compiled in my absence by Clare)
build a theatre
projections into the trees
a shadow multiplex
does it fold up?
huge resistance
I finished up with a dreadful thing
a tatty old theme park
it grows an inch in circumference
every year
my cats go in
because of its floppiness
I'll put some tape measures on them
it forces me to change
my outstretched arms
you never quite get all of it
pallets of denim waste
like biscuits
you can smell it
forbidden things
there was an ants' nest
unfortunately
I learn differently
you can slot things in
make bridges not walls
engage me emotionally
live in a book
Betty's Beautiful Life
it's about an oak
a massive beater with dangerous blades
I had to take it apart
has anyone measured a tree?
holy of holies
