Life by the River
It's my 65th birthday today and I had a lovely day. There was cake, there were books by favourite authors, lunch with my boys and finished off with a little postcard from my everyday walking view.
As well as my 65years I'm celebrating my 80th postcard.
I thought I would show you the actual view as well as the postcard today so you can see what I keep from reality, what I simplify and what I change.
This is the view looking out over the reed beds towards the far shore. Today it was that silver streak of light on the water that struck me. It really catches the eye and contrasts starkly with the dark edges of the shore and reed bed.
This is my interpretation of the scene. I kept the drama of the sky and the silver streaks but I moved away from the exact local colour fo the rest of the scene. This is partly determined by the acrylic guoache set I'm using. It doesn't have some of my usual useful colours such as yellow ochre so I'm having to mix an approximation. It's also partly to do with me trying to let go of needing to colour match and simply look more at the values . trying to capture the essence of what attracted my atatention in the first place is more important than getting the exact colour...unless the colour was the thing that attracted my attention!
It's quite freeing not being so hung up on colour. Give it a go and see if you feel the same.
