It became a challenge for me to scan the clouds and see how many colours I could find in them. I like watching them as they change shape, the lovely wispy edges and the billowing thunderheads, they are all fascinating. Clouds are notoriously difficult to paint because they change so quickly. I notice this even more now I spend so much time looking at clouds over the river and reflected in the river as well. One of the best ways to improve is to do regular cloud studies. Here's a watercolour study of storm clouds gathering over the far hills. I struggle with watercolours but still I persist! It's these quick studies that build up my skills so that when I have a painting with a sky full of clouds I can tackle it with some degree of confidence. Painting difficult subjects is just like any other hard thing in life. Practice, practice, practice and eventually it will get easier. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
