Sometimes as often as four or five times year, Mercury and Venus meet in conjunction. This year, one of these conjunctions occurs in Aries on April 19, 2024 at 4:49 AM EDT, at 17° Aries 32', in the decan that Austin Coppock called the Crown and the dodek given to Scorpio of Aries, what I call Eruptions from Below.
Mercury is often understood to represent communication, language, speech, writing, and excellent information gathering and dissemination. Venus represents creativity and beauty, heightened aesthetics, adulation of loveliness, and sensuality. When they meet, it's usually museum-worthy: a feast for eyes or ears, skin, tongue, nose, accompanied by a richness of language heavy with well-endowed metaphor and spine-tingling cunning linguistics, word play and sense play in delectable communion. There's liveliness and creativity in this pairing, even with Mercury retrograde.
For Venus and Mercury in Conjunction
Hail to you, heaven's queen in rich brocades,
lounging deshabille before the hearth —
and you, sly herald, whose knowledge cascades
from weaponized tongue: may secrets come forth
as you sit trading jokes and entendres,
delicious gossip and secrets unmasked,
clever repartee and wicked laughter.
Truth-or-dare wit, riskiest of genres,
where décolletage is offered, not asked,
and all is foreplay for what comes after.
There could be sex, of course, as between friends —
but this extended teasing might last hours;
and it would be the most perfect of ends
if they reached dawn still wielding these powers —
if sunrise found them aroused, in this state,
their lusts well-matched and flustering their cheeks,
each touch, every word, a frisson of yearning.
Yet they refrain from banging on the gate:
A hand might grope; a tongue licks as it speaks,
yet nothing douses this slow, smoldering...
We gaze upon thee both, in shyest wonder,
seeing in you, the eloquence of Night —
beauty's radiance, intellect's thunder,
a double-diadem that crowns delight.
And oh! How ravishing you each appear,
both larking as coquette or ingenue,
cunning philanderer, callow naif —
immodest shock becomes grin, ear to ear,
spreading wide what once was entre-nous...
flirtation as art, perfection of life.
Of all the conjunctions, it's probably the most flirtatious.
It's also queer as fuck.
The chart of the conjunction shows that it takes place in the second house, with Saturn and Mars angular just above the horizon in a night chart. As one of the faster-moving conjunctions (only the Moon's are faster), its conditions are only likely to persist for a few hours — but it's the sort of night where a bunch of college-aged former high school theater kids might find themselves gaping in amazement as they drink milkshakes and eat omelettes in a Waffle House while a gorgeous leading lady and her gay best friend trade fabulous insults and double-entendres; finally, as dawn nears, the whole party is asked to leave by a stern-faced waitress who's been bussing tables since the first Moon landing in 1969.
It's a remarkable thing to get kicked out of a Waffle House after a night of celebration and carousing. May your night be similarly, pleasantly memorable.
