Happy almost Fall, y'all! Let's make a mushroom hat, or, more specifically a fly agaric mushroom or Amanita muscaria hat to celebrate!
You will need:
- A wide-brimmed sun hat, any size: My sunhat was in the giveaway pile, but I'm glad creativity struck before I actually had a chance to give it away!
- White felt for spots: Scrappy felt works here.
- White felt for bottom circle: The height/width should be at least the hat's diameter.
- Red fabric: The height/width should be at least 2" bigger than the hat's diameter. Tip - I used a cloth napkin that just so happened to be the perfect size and didn't have to deal with fraying fabric edges.
- Sewing needle
- Sewing thread
- Hot glue
- Scissors
- Marker
How to:
Drape the red fabric on your hat and fold over to the hat's underside. Tack down the fabric with a simple stitch. It's ok to keep the fabric a little loose to allow for some hat movement.
Trace your hat on the sheet of white felt. Cut a slightly smaller circle than the hat; cut out a center circle for the head. Sew or hot glue onto the underside of your hat tucking in any pieces of red fabric as you go. You'll notice in my picture that when I started to attach the white felt I ended up with excess felt. If this happens to you, too, you can either cut out the excess felt or fold a flap (as I did) and sew/glue down.
Next, cut out varying circle- and oval-ish shapes. Sew or glue onto the top of the hat.
Pair with an all white fit (for the stem!) and prance around town with a fun, new Fall hat perfect for farmers markets, garden soirees, trips to the local nursery, and of course Halloween fun(gi).
