Part of the blurb for this exhibition reads "Between 1939 and 1996, dozens of photographers were employed by government agencies to capture Australian life. This fascinating exhibition delves deep into the lives and work of these talented individuals who helped to preserve our rich visual heritage, including Harry Frauca, Max Dupain, Mervyn Bishop and many more."
Exhibitions at the National Archives building in Kings Avenue often highlight under explored features of Australia's past. This exhibition celebrates the people employed by the government to record and represent us to us. Photographic representation of our nation in the era 1939-96 moved rapidly with the society and this set shows that change.
The included image was taken by Bill Payne titled Reeling in their catch 1987. It is in colour which many of the images in the exhibition are not. The selected images range over the landscape, urban and rural, the population in their diversity and include shots that are remarkable for their own beauty.
While several panels reference women photographers the exhibition is about the work of the men employed in the agencies.
