We saw the brilliant Danish band Volbeat in June this year, as the opening act for Metallica.
The lead singer, Michael Poulson, has the most amazing voice and stage presence. He is not showy or flamboyant, but he really commands the stage. His voice is absolutely incredible and he connects brilliantly with the audience. The fans are with Volbeat every step of the way.
My favourite Volbeat song is Lola Montezhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMJVaN1PqH8
And this is the best cover of Metallica's Enter the Sandman I have ever heardhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOGpaTpyLVw
There are some singers who have brilliant voices (Freddie Mercury, Adele, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse). Then you have singers who have a huge stage show, lots of fans, but not the best voices (Spice Girls and Madonna). You also have the heavy metal singers who scream and yell over the music so you don't know if they can sing or not. And singers that are great on recordings, but awful live. Dio had an incredible voice though, as does as Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. Axl Rose had an amazing voice but there is not that much left of it now. You can have an artist with a technically brilliant voice who does not connect with the audience.
Michael Poulson is in my top five favourite singers. He can do heavy music with a clear, true voice and has stage presence. He can belt it out for audiences of tens of thousands with perfect pitch. I think Volbeat should be way more famous than they are.
Other live performances I love are
- David Bowie and The Spiders from Mars, Hammersmith Odeon, 1973
- Pearl Jam, Netherlands, 1992 (PinkPop)
- Guns n Roses, Tokyo, 1992
- Queen, Wembley, 1985 (Live Aid)
- Axl Rose and Elton John, Wembley, 1992 (Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert)
