An elaborate photostat laboratory, complete with camera, dark room and dryer, has been set up by the town in the attic of the Municipal Building and is now in operation making copies of veterans' discharge papers free of charge and doing other town work.
A separate room was built in the northeast corner of the unfinished third story of the building to house the new equipment, which was placed in operation last week and by which copies of GO discharge papers have already been turned out.
Heretofore, copying has been done in Boston through the cooperation of the Norwood town clerk, with whom veterans must file a copy of their discharge papers. Some 200 were processed In this manner prior to the purchasing and setting up of the equipment here.
The new Norwood photostat machine is the latest on the market, featuring simplicity of operation. Photographing of the papers Is done on a massive camera, from which the film is fed on a conveyor belt to the darkroom for developing. From the developing washing process, prints are brought to the drying machine in the main room.
While the entire operation requires less than 10 minutes, the machine is not used for only one or a few papers. Instead, papers are held as the veterans bring them into the town clerk's office, and are processed in large batches about twice a week. This primarily is to obviate the necessity of continuously mixing new solutions of developer and fixer.
Town Clerk Walter Blascnak instigated the installation of the equipment, realizing its value in connection with veterans work, as well as its worth to other town departments. Miss Rita Tarpey, secretary- to Mr. Blasenak, has been thoroughly trained in the operation of the equipment.
Town skill and labor were used in building the room, while the photostat people set up the equipment.
The laboratory Is available at all times for use by the various town departments.
