The Canadian Bookbinders & Book Artists Guild (CBBAG) is hosting Kindred Spirits: The Lucy Maud Montgomery Legacy as interpreted by contemporary book artists. You can read about the exhibition and submit your own work by visiting the website: Kindred Spirits
My local chapter ran a Bookbinding Level 3 this month, and in honor of Kindred Spirits I created a text block for the students to bind using Anne of Green Gables. This book is in the public domain and available on Project Gutenberg.
To further promote Kindred Spirits, and to encourage people to create something and submit it, I'm now sharing the text block with all of you! The text block is a PDF file already formatted and shuffled so it is ready to print. Page numbers are added for ease of making sure everything is in order, but below you'll also find printing and folding instructions. Of course, I'm always happy to answer questions as well.
Kindred Spirits: Anne of Green Gables Text Block:
Printing Instructions:
The text block is 260 pages (which prints double-sided so you will need 130 sheets of paper) and prints on 8.5 x 11" paper. If you are concerned about the grain of the paper, I would recommend purchasing 11 x 17" paper which can be folded in half and cut to give you the proper size paper with the grain running head to tail. For Bookbinding Level 3 I purchased Hammermill Printer Paper (32lbs) from Amazon. This paper worked wonderfully in Bookbinding 3; it ploughed well and was great for rounding and backing.
When printing there are three things to keep in mind:
- Pages to Print (red): should be set to "All". It's easiest to print the entire book at once and just let your printer run if your printer is capable of printing double-sided automatically. If you have to manually flip the pages, you can print one signature at a time. To do this, instead of selecting "All", select "Pages" and print 10 pages at a time (e.g. 1-10, 11-21)
- Page Sizing & Handling (blue): Here you can play with "Fit" or "Actual Size". I prefer "Actual Size" as it will give you true margins and true font size where "Fit" does make the font a bit smaller. Try printing out one sheet and see the difference for yourself!
- Double-sided (yellow): You want to indicate that you will "Print on both sides of the Paper" and you will "Flip on the short edge".
Folding the Signatures:
Signatures consist of 5 printed sheets of paper, and there are page numbers to help you out! Count five sheets from the pile to fold at a time. The middle of each section will be the page numbers that are in order side by side. The first section will have pages 5 & 6 beside each other, fold the signature so that these pages meet. When you have folded everything, you should have 13 signatures.
Now it's up to you to decide how you'll sew it and what binding you'll design for it!
And if you're not yet a CBBAG member but considering becoming one they are currently having a promotion for new members. If you sign up between now and December 31, 2023, you will receive a credit to take one online workshop (limited to the 3hr workshops) free! Membership is $60 annually, and for students it's $25.
