Steam shovels started last week on the construction of the new Atlantic and Pacific market at the corner of Cottage and Central Streets. The Platt Construction Co., which recently completed work on the new Guild theatre, are the general contractors on the job, with T. F. Riley in charge of the plumbing.

Harry J. Korslund, architect of the new store, states that the completed structure will cover an area of 7000 square feet, the size of an average building lot. On the street sides shrubbery and plantings have been planned and in the rear of the building a graveled area will accommodate fifty cars. The parking area in the rear of the Norwood Theatre, which has recently returned to the possession of the Housing Securities Corporation of which George F. Willett is president, will accommodate additional cars.

Will Face Square

The new building will face the corner of Central and Cottage Streets with the entrance there Facing diagonally on the square, the new A&P. will be plainly visible along Washington Street. The store will be of modern design, of light gray or tan stucco, with steel windows on all sides for light and ventilation. The usual plate glass windows will grace the front, and a permanent marquee will an awning equipped in fashion with counters, etc., washing machines in the basement, twelve-inch floor, reinforced concrete slabs, the ceiling paneled composition.

It is expected that other buildings wil! follow the construction of the market as companion stores on either side. The building is being erected for the Housing Securities Corporation and is being largely financed by the First National Bank of Boston.
