Norwood skaters competing in the Nationals Championships at Lincoln, Nebraska came up with their first title last Tuesday night when the Seniors Fours team took the top honors in that division. They are members of Norwood's Roll Land Figure Skating and Dance Club that has 15 members competing this week in the national event.
The new champions are Alan Welch, 101 Westview Drive, Norwood, Diane Kern, West Roxbury, David Tassinari, Plymouth Lorna Jean Urban, Brockton. They have skated as a team for the past two years and have recently won the State of Massachusetts and Regional titles.
The feat of capturing their National Championship is considered remarkable in the face of very limited practice facilities caused when the Norwood Roll Land Rink burned down six months ago and left the whole club homeless. They have had to go to distant points to prepare for the fiercely contended title meets of the past few months.
The team has now qualified for the World Championships that will be held this Fall in Japan.
