I am trying to stay away from the time suck of online media at the moment. This means avoiding streaming networks, social media and digital books. My primary reason is I want to have a bit of a screen-break.
Most physical books in Sweden are - naturally - in Swedish. I read Swedish with no problem but it takes longer and I find it quite tiring. Having said that, I do enjoy Scandi crime, and prefer to read these books in their original language if I can.
For the past few weeks I have been buying English-language books at charity shops for $1 to $2 each. Because there is not such a wide range, I have to take whatever I find that I think I may like. This has led to me exploring new authors I have never read before, which I am rather enjoying. I have noticed that most of the books people buy (or donate) in English are crime novels and biographies of musicians. The only romances I have seen have been by Marian Keyes. And there are loads of copies of Hilary Clinton's autobiography in English. I wondered if these were bought in airports, or if people wanted to read them as soon as they came out, before they were translated into Swedish.
I have never read Michael Connelly before, or Ian Rankin. They are quite easy reads. I have read Heavier than Heaven before but it is the best Cobain biography out there in my opinion, so I thought I would read it again. Cross took liberties with the description of Kurt's last days, but the book is otherwise very well-researched.
