Hi friends! Today, I have a rapid-fire review of the watercolor brushes I bought on Prime Day. The good news is I think they were an excellent value, so if you bought them and were waiting for a review before you used them. you can crack them open and enjoy! I will do a full video review and demo with them, but it will probably be a week or more, so I didn't want to keep you waiting. In the photos, you can see the thinnest and thickest marks I could make with these brushes in each set as well as some general mark-making to get an idea of what they are capable of.
Grabie set of 9 quill brushes: These came with sizing in them that easily washed out. They all had protective caps on them and came packed in a reusable tube for safe transport and storage. They are a black synthetic squirrel that is snappier than a Princeton Neptune but not as snappy as a white nylon or golden taklon. The bristle length is average for a quill, and they provide a lot of control and holding capacity. I think this many quills may be overkill for one person and several brushes can make the same size marks so I'd suggest splitting this set between 2 or 3 people. The set is the same price I paid on Prime Day, making it a great deal, especially if you want to go in with friends. Keep in mind that quills are much larger than standard rounds with a 0 being like a #6 standard round and an 8 being like a 30!
Artegria set of 2 quills: These brushes were packaged with protective disposable caps in a no-frills box. The sizing is easily washed out. These synthetic squirrel brushes are softer and more absorbent than the Grabie quills. The hairs are very similar to the Princeton Neptune brushes, but the Artegria quills have longer bristles, so they hold more water. I prefer the longer hairs on a quill, but the longer hairs make a brush harder to control so beginners or folks with tremors may find them harder to control. I love the sizes (#2 and #6 in quill sizing, which is similar to a #10 and #16 round). You really can't beat the price and quality!
Artegria set of 10 assorted watercolor brushes: I have had my eye on this set for years, and they did not disappoint! See the photos above for shapes and sizes. These synthetic squirrel brushes came capped and sized (wash with water before use just like the other brushes I reviewed today) in a reusable tube. It came with a velvet pouch as well, but I wouldn't recommend storing them in it. The hairs are slightly firmer and snappier than the Artegia quills. The only negative is that I wish the bristles on the #10 and #12 rounds were longer because the fatter the brush the longer the hairs should ideally be for paint holding and pointing of the brush. Still, for that price, it's worth it!
I'll do a full video demo in a week or two. I didn't want anyone to miss out on the Grabie deal as it's still 50% off with a 10% coupon. Also, I wanted to make sure to use these straight away so that people would have time to return them if they were not up to snuff. Luckily they were all as good as I thought they would be. I love finding high-quality art supplies at affordable prices. It really makes my day! I hope you have a lovely week and til next time happy crafting!
