As if you needed another reason to visit The Seattle Public Library's West Seattle-area branches this summer, we've got three for you: Traveling exhibits that celebrate and explore history and community culture on the Duwamish Peninsula are on display until August 22 at the South Park, Southwest and West Seattle branches.
Created by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, which manages the Log House Museum, the "Community Explorers" exhibits are designed to make local history more relevant and accessible.
The exhibit at the West Seattle Branch, titled "Welcome Windows: The Duwamish Peninsula," explores what has drawn people to West Seattle and the impact that we leave behind on the land and the community. It looks at themes such as landing stories, the built environment, plants that feed and industry and innovation.
The exhibit at the Southwest Branch -- "White Center: Food and Community" -- explores the history of White Center from 1900 to 2020. According to the exhibit materials, it tackles "food accessibility, how migration patterns influence food landscapes, and the interconnections between food, place, and culture." For the exhibit, the historical society interviewed restaurant owners in White Center to learn how they think about place and community while creating their menus.
Finally, the South Park Branch's exhibit, "What Makes a Community," examines the challenges of preserving neighborhood history and community in an area often targeted for industrialization. It looks at the impact of growth, the history of the neighborhood and how "citizens preserve their neighborhood community and culture through grassroots movements."
Be sure to explore other offerings at the branches beyond everyday wonders such as access to printers, computers, free wi-fi, collections and well-stocked children's sections. The Southwest Branch, for example, is hosting a traveling Short Story Dispenser, and offers a weekly family story time (Mondays, 10:30 a.m.). The South Park Branch has a weekly Spanish story time (Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m.), preschool story time (Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m.) and air conditioning every day! The Carnegie-era West Seattle Branch hosts a preschool story time every Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
After they're done traveling, the "Community Explorers" exhibits will eventually be on permanent display at the Log House Museum.
The exhibits are supported by 4Culture and Seattle's Office of Arts and Culture.
