On 6 February 2022, Elizabeth II became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth Realms.

The Library decided to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee (2-5th June, 2022) by creating a physical display of memorable Royal visits.

Royalty have regularly visited Cirencester for formal visits as well as to play Polo in Cirencester Park.

From our Archives Collection, we know that Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the RAC/RAU in two occasions.  In 1996 on 28th March for the College's 150th Anniversary and on 29th April 1963.

1963

The royal visitors were given a warm reception by the students. The Queen and the Duke showed a keen interest in all the departments of the College and various experiments on the farms were explained to them. Farm Director Mr H.V.Hughes escorted the Queen through the farmyard at Coates Manor Farm.

In one of the pictures on display the Queen is looking at farm machinery on exhibition in the field immediately in front of the Royal Agricultural College.

The photographs from the Chelthenham Chronicle and the Gloucestershire Graphic reflected the enthusiasm about her visit at the time.

1996

The Royal couple arrived at the College in a Rolls Royce led by a police motorcycle outrider to be greeted by crowds of well-wishers. Despite the wet weather they were given a tour of the College grounds during their three-hour visit. On arrival the Queen was presented with a posy by overseas student Miranda Ndegwa.

According to the Gloucestershire Echo in "tiny details" on her visit, the Queen wore a stone coloured coat, a co-ordinating soft blue hat and knee length, black leather boots, graciously stopped to accept greetings, posies and gifts from well-wishers at every opportunity during the hectic day.

At the front of the College, the Queen planted a mature black poplar tree to mark the College's anniversary. She also took time to meet the College beagles.

A selection of pictures from the Archives capture some of the highlights of their visits, including their tour of the library by chief librarian Sarah Howie.

Amongst items on display there is a menu, a detailed programme and the Visitors book with the Queen's signature.

College principal at the time Prof Arthur Jones said: "We've had a most pleasing day. It was relaxed and it was a pleasure showing Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh the various aspects of College".

All in all, these visits were regarded as very special by the University and local community.

RAU Library congratulates Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, England's longest serving British monarch.
