just as the cherry blossoms are reaching full bloom here, i have finally gotten to finishing the last two clothing projects i had planned for myself for the autumn/winter past.
the first-- a raglan sweatshirt. i had intended it for the colder seasons, but i'm hoping there will be some chilly days left to have at least a few chances to wear it this spring. with its cropped length and boxy shape, it won't look or feel too warm, i think.
the sweatshirt fabric i chose for this was made on a loopwheel knitting machine, meaning it has a soft, fluffy texture due to the unique construction method where there is no tension placed on the thread as it is knit up. so when it came to the neckline of the sweatshirt, i decided to keep in line with the soft look and skip the stitching to hold down the seam allowance. while the stitching does give it a more finished appearance, it seemed to stiffen the neckline and didn't look quite right.
the second-- a plaid gathered skirt. nothing complicated; just your standard skirt with an elastic waist. the only thing out of the ordinary that i did was use the flannel fabric wrong-side out, so that the brushed surface was on the inside of the skirt instead of the outside, as i felt the nap made the dark colors sort of washed-out looking and the plaid lines fuzzy. i much preferred the dark colors dark and the plaid lines crisp. as an added benefit, using the right side on the inside brought the softer, warmer surface towards my skin, making it more pleasant to the touch.
my next sewing goal is to make some short sleeve t-shirts to replace the ones that wore out last year. i'm finding that it's much harder than i originally thought to make a full wardrobe for a single person (maybe 1.5 people including those for my son?). And i'm not even trying for all of it...
