Seven contestants join what they think is a wilderness survival reality show. But during the first episode, they learn that the real point of the show is to expose all their secrets. When one of the contestants disappears, Detective Ffion Morgan is called in to investigate. And then when someone is murdered, everyone becomes a suspect.
This is the second book in a crime series featuring Welsh detective Ffion Morgan. I didn't realize this book was part of a series when I checked it out from the library. This is an author I've read before so when I saw she had a new book out, I put it on my list to read. Reading the book, I could tell I was missing some facts and backstories. It almost felt like I was dropped into the middle of a story because there were references made to people and events that happened prior that it felt like the reader should know about. I presume these are references to the first book in the series. It was a little confusing but I got through this book fine so I don't think it's necessary to read the first book first, but I think it would help because you would know precisely what the characters are talking about.
It wasn't until I was about a third of the way into the book that I really got into the rhythm of the story. The chapters' points of view shift from character to character quickly and frequently, and there are a lot of characters, so it was a bit challenging to keep everyone straight in my head at first. I came to enjoy these quick character changes because they kept the action going and the story moved along at a brisk pace.
I didn't guess who the killer was until the author started laying some big hints and I think I figured it out when Detective Morgan did. Although everyone is a suspect and the author tried hard to give every character a motive for the murder, there were just some characters that I didn't suspect so I was able to cross them off my list easily.
The book takes place in the Welsh mountains and I loved reading about this little part of Wales. The author also uses a lot of Welsh phrases and doesn't always translate so I had some fun trying to figure out what the characters were saying.
I thought this was a good mystery with some great characters. Maybe I should go back and read book one now?
