"The Story Behind Seattle's Iconic, Eye-Catching Library": The Central Library at 20

By rablogspl on September 6, 2024

To acknowledge and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Central Library, the Seattle Channel just published a terrific piece about the building's history and architecture, which includes footage of opening day on May 23, 2004, when hundreds of people lined up to get a glimpse of the spectacular design they had heard so much about.

As Mayor Greg Nickels said when it opened: "Who ever would have guessed that our beloved Mariners would be in town for a home game and the hottest ticket would be the public library?"

The Seattle Channel interviewed Valerie Wonder, the Central Library's regional manager, John Lamont, a genealogy librarian whose first day of work was on opening day; and a high-rise window washer with Puget Sound Window Maintenance who talked about what it's like to scale the dizzying heights and odd angles of the iconic building with his team every year to make the 10,000 windows gleam anew.
