Poking my head outside the front door early in the morning is always rewarded by a symphony of bird calls and chatter. I'm delighted by them all from the muted sparrow to the flashy parrots , the honeyeaters and the starlings, the wattlebirds and the blue wrens. Looking out over the river I can see rafts of seagulls floating near the shore, a flock of cormorants heading upriver and maybe catch a glimpse of a white bellied sea eagle on it's way home to nest. I'm hoping to sketch all the different birds I see around my home by the river as part of my daily mini paintings. Since I'm staying home as carer I thought why not feature the humble house sparrow in today's postcard. As artist's we can easily fall into the trap of looking for the perfect subject instead of getting on with making some art! It's a useful skill to be able to find a subject wherever you happen to be. Our maple tree is a favourite playground for all sorts of birds, including sparrows. They love it because there are three water bowls in the garden beneath which they like to dip in and out of. Mink, our cat, loves to watch the show but at sixteen no longer has the desire to expend energy trying to catch them. This is a simple watercolour sketch with a few fineliner marks. Less is more for me. I'm not interested in taking hours to capture every feather. I simply hope to catch the character of the bird. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
