Seen on The Chocolate Lady's Book Review Blog, Spell the Month in Books is run by Jana at Reviews From the Stacks a pretty straightforward monthly linkup. Find a book title that starts with each letter in the month's name, make a list, share your link, and that's it! The linkup opens on the first Saturday of the month and remains open through the end of the month so that you can participate whenever is convenient.
September's theme is Back to School; I like to pick books I own, have read or which are on my TBR list, for the E's other than the first one, I had to go hunting on the internet for something that fit this month's theme.
S - The Scholar
by Dervla McTiernan
When DS Cormac Reilly's girlfriend Emma stumbles across the victim of a hit and run early one morning, he is first on the scene of a murder that would otherwise never have been assigned to him. The dead girl is carrying an ID, that of Carline Darcy, heir apparent to Darcy Therapeutics, Ireland's most successful pharmaceutical company. Darcy Therapeutics has a finger in every pie, from sponsoring university research facilities to funding political parties to philanthropy – it has funded Emma's own ground-breaking research. The investigation into Carline's death promises to be high profile and high pressure.
As Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to a Darcy laboratory and, increasingly, to Emma herself. Cormac is sure she couldn't be involved, but how well does he really know her? After all, this isn't the first time Emma's been accused of murder...
This is the second book in the Cormac Reilly series and I really enjoyed it.

P - The Philosopher's Daughter
by Alison Booth
A tale of two very different sisters whose 1890s voyage from London into remote outback Australia becomes a journey of self-discovery, set against a landscape of wild beauty and savage dispossession.
London in 1891: Harriet Cameron is a talented young artist whose mother died when she was barely five. She and her beloved sister Sarah were brought up by their father, radical thinker James Cameron. After adventurer Henry Vincent arrives on the scene, the sisters' lives are changed forever. Sarah, the beauty of the family, marries Henry and embarks on a voyage to Australia. Harriet, intensely missing Sarah, must decide whether to help her father with his life's work or devote herself to painting.
When James Cameron dies unexpectedly, Harriet is overwhelmed by grief. Seeking distraction, she follows Sarah to Australia, and afterwards into the Northern Territory outback, where she is alienated by the casual violence and great injustices of outback life.
Her rejuvenation begins with her friendship with an Aboriginal stockman and her growing love for the landscape. But this fragile happiness is soon threatened by murders at a nearby cattle station and by a menacing station hand seeking revenge.
I have this on my Kindle and on Audible waiting for me to read/listen
T - Teacher of the Year
by M.A. Wardell
Love: Not as easy as ABC.
They were supposed to keep things casual. Who'd expect they'd be schooled in love?
Those who can, teach. Marvin Block is one of the best kindergarten teachers out there. And despite his anxiety, Marvin's life is sweet. He knows what he wants. And what he wants is the Teacher of the Year Award. Not just for himself – his school needs him to win.
Returning from break, the New Year finds Marvin all set to welcome a new pupil to his class. But when Illona walks in with her cute-as-hell single dad beside her, Marvin's focus starts to slide.
Sure, his students always come first, but he deserves to have a life outside the classroom, too, right?
As their friendship starts to deepen, Marvin realizes Olan has the potential to teach him things about love he never thought possible. But with the Teacher of the Year award and his school's future on the line, now's not the time for anything complicated.
Education has always been Marvin's world. And he needs to keep a cool head if he wants to win the award and save his school. But will it be worth it if he loses Olan in the process?
With Olan's past and Marvin's present colliding, their experiment in love hangs in the balance. Marvin knows what he wants out of life. But now he's forced to consider what he wants out of love.
Will Marvin chalk the relationship up to experience? Or can they revise their story into a textbook romance?
Teacher of the Year is a steamy open door friends-to-lovers gay romance novel that explores the balance between friends, family, career, and relationships while overcoming trauma and dealing with anxiety.
This was a fun and cute read (my review)
E - The Education of Little Tree
by Forrest Carter
The Education of Little Tree tells of a boy orphaned very young, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression. Little Tree as his grandparents call him is shown how to hunt and survive in the mountains, to respect nature in the Cherokee Way, taking only what is needed, leaving the rest for nature to run its course. Little Tree also learns the often callous ways of white businessmen and tax collectors, and how Granpa, in hilarious vignettes, scares them away from his illegal attempts to enter the cash economy. Granma teaches Little Tree the joys of reading and education. But when Little Tree is taken away by whites for schooling, we learn of the cruelty meted out to Indian children in an attempt to assimilate them and of Little Tree's perception of the Anglo world and how it differs from the Cherokee Way. A classic of its era, and an enduring book for all ages, The Education of Little Tree has now been redesigned for this twenty-fifth anniversary edition.
M - My Not So Grumpy Professor
by D.K Sutton
ISO: Ways to tame a grumpy professor who likes to throw things, growls commands, and is a decade older. Oh, and he's also the boss. Asking for a friend.
Professor Gabriel Morgan is in southern Missouri for one reason: to repair his relationship with his brother. It is definitely not to make friends or coddle the teaching assistants the university throws at him. Benjamin Carter is young, barely competent, and more trouble than he's worth. He's also fun and charming and stunningly beautiful.
Gabriel's goal of getting Benji to quit isn't as easy as he expects. Instead of cowering, Benji either tells Gabriel exactly what he thinks or, worse still, flirts outrageously. It's maddening and so very tempting.
Benji has no desire to be Professor Morgan's latest failed TA, but grumpy older men are his weakness. And beneath that gruff exterior, Professor Morgan is sweet and good and so very passionate. Benji doesn't do relationships; he has too much to lose. But for Gabriel he might just take that chance.
They're both holding on to their secrets—Benji's present and Gabriel's past. But these things have a way of coming out. Is this thing between them real? And are they willing to risk everything to find out?
My (Not So) Grumpy Professor is a 75,000+ MM contemporary romance. It is the second book in the (Not So) University series but can be read as a standalone. It features a grumpy bear professor, a cinnamon roll TA, meddling best friends, an antique desk that is very sturdy indeed, mending brotherly bonds, brutal tequila nights, a schedule loving roommate—seriously, Atticus needs to calm the F down—did I mention meddling best friends? And Gem and Sadie, two unimpressed goldfish swimming around and minding their own business.
I really enjoyed this romance book
B - The Bookstore at Rivers End
by Phillipa Nefri Clark
The discovery of a mysterious diary sparks an emotional journey of healing and second chances...
Harriet Main moves to the beautiful coastal town of Rivers End with a heavy heart. The bookstore she's opening on the idyllic main street is a small distraction from the pain of her recent divorce, and the guilt over failing her daughter Olive when she needed her most.
When Harriet finds an anonymous old diary in a collection of books donated to the store, she's shocked when the donor refuses to take it back, wanting nothing to do with the tragic book. It's Olive who wants them to read the diary, and when they find a wistful account of a treasure hunt set up by three teenage girls, they decide to follow the clues together. Perhaps the search will help Harriet find the lost pieces of herself.
But uncovering the story hidden in the pages unlocks a decades-old mystery that changes everything, for Harriet, for her daughter, and for the writer whose past they have unwittingly unearthed. I really enjoyed book 1 in this series and have this lined up on my Kindle to read

R - Read Between the Lines
by Rachel Lacey
From award-winning author Rachel Lacey comes a playful romance about a Manhattan bookstore owner and a reclusive author who love to hate—and hate to love—each other.
Books are Rosie Taft's life. And ever since she took over her mother's beloved Manhattan bookstore, they've become her home too. The only thing missing is her own real-life romance like the ones she loves to read about, and Rosie has an idea of who she might like to sweep her off her feet. She's struck up a flirty online friendship with lesbian romance author Brie, and what could be more romantic than falling in love with her favorite author?
Jane Breslin works hard to keep her professional and personal lives neatly separated. By day, she works for the family property development business. By night, she puts her steamier side on paper under her pen name: Brie. Jane hasn't had much luck with her own love life, but her online connection with a loyal reader makes Jane wonder if she could be the one.
When Rosie learns that her bookstore's lease has been terminated by Jane's family's business, romance moves to the back burner. Even though they're at odds, there's no denying the sparks that fly every time they're together. When their online identities are revealed, will Jane be able to write her way to a happy ending, or is Rosie's heart a closed book?
This one has been waiting on my Kindle for far too long.
If you joined in how did your chain go? Next month, October is Your favourite genre which I am going to find a bit hard because I'm not sure I have a favourite genre, I love all different genres depending on my mood.
