Life by the River
This is a view up the river I always enjoy and have meant to paint for some time. There's no really good place to stop so I always pass by thinking...next time.
Today I left home a little earlier than needed and parked the car so I could cross the road and straddle the guardrail to get a couple of photos. It wasn't a good place to sketch with cars whizzing past very close to me so the photos helped me remember the scene when I got home.
I used a different blue for this one and the palette is quite modern and bright. My ultramarine is running out and I need to get some new tubes so I picked up my little used Turner Acryla Gouache Sky Blue and used it instead. It was a very sunny break in a rainy day so the bright colours seemed to match the sunny mood.
There's always a few colours that get overlooked and languish in the box whenever I buy a set of any media: pastels, watercolours, acrylic or gouache. You might ask "why buy sets then?" The two main reasons are economy and trying out a new medium.
It's usually cheaper to buy a set than individual tubes or sticks so the few I don't use much are worth the overall savings. If I want to try out a new medium I'm more likely to buy a small general set that would be portable for traveling. If I enjoy the medium then I can add in extra colours as I wish. If I don't enjoy them I haven't overspent and I can always pass the set onto someone who will appreciate and use them. Sets are also easier to store and travel with.
Sometimes I'll deliberately search out my least used colours and do my next painting using them. It's a good way to shake up my palette and move me in a different direction. I've found surprising new favourites this way.
