A little bit Turneresque: Postcard No 68

Life by the River

I get to see a lot of sun rises and moonlit nights living under a big sky by the Huon River. It never gets boring.

One thing we often remark on is how big the sky feels. That's because it's reflected in the river, which is very wide here, so we get two skies. We also get a view right up the river and looking out our window it seems a bit like we're living on a loch with mountains at the head and boats sailing to and fro.

I think I was channeling Turner with this postcard!

I drove up the river recently, in the early morning, and was mesmerised by the round glow of the sun through the fog.

This one is painted from memory with scant regard for the actual details. It's all about that sun shining hazily through the fog and everything else is a mere suggestion.

Choppy little brushstrokes for the sky, a bit of warm ochre and sienna for the vegetation and some graded yellow washes for the sun.

Very simple, very quick and really caught the mood of the morning for me.

Sometimes you don't need much to evoke a mood.
