Last August 27, the Cebu City government celebrated the exceptional contributions of Cebuano artists across various fields with the Sugboanong Bahandi Awards. he city council's approval of the proposal to honor these artists this year paved the way for the recognition ceremony.
Cebuano Artists honored for Cultural Contributions
A panel from the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAO) selected the awardees based on their significant impact on the arts scene.
Two prominent figures in the entertainment industry, Asia's timeless diva Dulce and acclaimed actress Pilar Pilapil, were among the honorees. Dulce was recognized for her enduring influence on the Philippine music industry, while Pilapil received the award for her outstanding performances in the film industry.
Other notable recipients included pianist Ingrid Sala Santa Maria for her contributions to music, Philippine Sports Commissioner Edward Hayco for his dedication to dance, fashion designer Philip Rodriguez, painter Celso Pepito, and Dr. Orlando Magno for his work in theater.
"I am humbled and honored to be awarded such distinction as Sugbuanong Bahandi in the field of fashion," fashion designer Philip Rodriguez posted on his Facebook page. "Salamat kaayo to Cebu City Cultural and Historical Commission and the Cebu city government. I am honored to be in great company with co awardees," he added naming his fellow Sugboanong Bahandi Awards recipients during the ceremony.
"I am grateful with my fellow designers for their tribute in Saludo portion. And to my family for their continued support and to my team. Again, Salamat. I will treasure this with my life!" Rodriguez ended his social media post.
The Sugboanong Bahandi Awards is a prestigious recognition bestowed by the Cebu City government to honor Cebuano artists who have made a lasting mark on the city. Previous recipients include Resil Mojares, Nicolas PacaƱa, Jose "Kimsoy" Yap, Romulo Galicano, Kenneth Cobonpue, and the late Msgr. Rody Villanueva.
The awarding ceremony served as a highlight of the Cebu City Arts Month, celebrating the rich artistic heritage of the city.
