Its beautiful patina and cast shadow had a lot of possibility. I have to say this was fun to paint! Leaving out any background really makes the rusty colours pop. It seems the only way I can manage to leave the white of the paper is by not doing a background! I used a very limited palette of burnt sienna, neutral tint, yellow ochre and ultramarine blue. I made sure to add in some reflected warms from the rusted metal into the cool shadows. Overall I'm happy that I managed to get a sense of age and crumbling rust in this little postcard. Maybe the tube watercolours are helping? I've left the rowlock sitting on the big rock so it doesn't get swept away again when there's a really high tide. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
