The Egg Islands at Franklin seperate the Huon River into two channels and create a haven for birdlife. Their sedge reeds also add a lovely warm contrast to the water. Driving upriver early I caught the morning light shining behind the island and lighting up the water.
The mist was still shrouding the hills and mountains and the sky was overcast and cloudy except for the band of intense golden light at the head of the river which reflected perfectly in the still morning water creating a golden river.
This postacrd is done with acrylic gouache in a brown craft paper sketchbook with a 1cm flat brush. i like the brush for nice, blocky marks although it can sometimes be a bit tricky getting rounder forms like the soft edges of clouds.
I like this crop of the original postcard better because it emphasises the light more and I think the island is too central in the original so if I were to do a larger version I would crop it down and concentrate on the main idea, which is the light reflecting in the water and surrounding Egg island ( you might notice I called it Snake Island in my sketch title because that's what someone in the family used to call it and it kind of stuck in my brain!)
