I was born and brought up in Africa. I spent the best part of 36 years there. I realised quickly when I moved to Sweden that tuberculosis, malaria, bilharzia, rabies, were not something that people ever worried about contracting.
A member of my family is currently ill with hepatitis A. I have had it, as have four other members of my family. I would not wish it on anyone. But you never hear about anyone having it in Sweden. I looked it up and found this diagram.
I then commented to my husband that I don't think I have ever seen a person with albinism in Sweden, though albinism seems fairly common in Africa. This article was quite interesting.
A South African friend of mine who was visiting commented on how many Swedish people wear glasses. I think this one is purely that people have access to eye tests and the money to buy glasses. I donate all my old glasses to Optometrists without Borders/Vision for all. Eye specialists donate their time to carry out eye tests in impoverished countries, and reuse donated frames (not lenses) to give more people access to corrected vision.
