we are celebrating Tanabata or the Star Festival
celebrated once a year on the 7th day of the 7th month

it is customary to write your wishes, for the year, on pieces of paper and hang them in the bamboo
Little Bear and Lucy climbed up the Japanese maple tree so the messages would catch the breeze and reach the stars
our wishes also hang from origami fabric cranes - in hopes they will come true
after their climb they relaxed in the shade

Tanabata is the story of two star crossed lovers - Vega and Altair, who can only meet once a year across the Milky Way
Vega was celebrated as a weaver and so the day was a time to party at Kawashima Textile School in 1987
a great time was had by students, teachers, families and the village
with fond memories I still celebrate each year
