These huge paws belonged to my friend Irene's Boerboel, Misty.
As my regular readers know, my home is a home that has been full of fosters and foster fails. Sometimes the creatures we save also save us and creep into our hearts so deeply that we cannot let them go.
My family has always had big dogs (Rottweilers, Rottweiler x Dobermans, and Boerboels). Almost all of them have been rescues. In many cases the dog:
grew too big
ate too much
was hard to handle
took too much time
needed too much stimulation and socialisation
developed big dog joint problems and the vet was too expensive..... so was either abandoned or given up
We decided that we were ready to foster a dog. We were not ready to adopt a dog because we had travel plans and were unsure if we were prepared for a full-time companion.
Well, the Universe had other plans for us.
We met two dogs for fostering Camden, a big goofball, loving, and friendly boy. But he was a BIG BOY. Then we met Venus (Miss V - or Veeny as we like to call her) She walked in very calmly and first sniffed around, then she slowly came over to give us a sniff. At first, we gave her space to check us out on her terms. My husband felt more comfortable with her calm demeanor, and she was also much smaller than the big boy Camden.
Her previous owners abandoned her and 2 of her litter in a backyard. They just left them. Neighbors threw food over for them, not sure how long they were alone before animal control came to get them and took them to the shelter. She was very skinny at this point.
The next day, we returned to pick her up for our 5-hour drive home. I was a little nervous as she had just met us briefly the day before. Veeny jumped eagerly in our car with her new toy, ready to get out of there. The drive was effortless. She settled in nicely and was a great passenger in the car. Then, I already felt the tug on my heartstrings. She walked into the house; I think she already knew this would be her forever home. It took us three weeks to seal the deal and make her part of our lives permanent.
And this beautiful girl enjoying her new life with her forever people. I had a suspicious leaking of my eyes as I typed this. Dogs are so good at living in the moment and she deserves so many happy moments.
