july wrap up: watching the olympics and a podcast.

By Shanna on July 31, 2024

Summer is just flying by! I saw that Ikea has just put out its Halloween and Fall decor and I can't believe it. Halloween seems like so far away! I haven't spent as much time outdoors this summer as I usually do. I think part of it is getting older and I go into the office every day during the week, so a lot of times on the weekends I don't want to do anything. I'm trying to break this habit and go out every day, even if it's just to a coffee shop to read my book. I feel really lazy when I don't leave my apartment and I hate that feeling. I'll keep you all posted as to if I actually go outside next month!

Here is my monthly wrap-up of some of the things I was up to in July.

What I'm watching:
Of course, I am watching The Olympics. I am not into sports but every four years I get sucked into watching the summer Olympics. My favorite sports to watch are gymnastics, synchronized diving, and synchronized swimming (although it's hard to find that sport airing on any channel). I root for all the countries and I love watching the medalists when they're on the podiums, so emotional! To be honest, I'm a little annoyed this year because I'm finding it especially challenging to figure out when things are on and where I can watch them. Here in the U.S., the Olympics are airing on NBC and their affiliated streaming services but I feel like they are not doing a great job letting us know when to tune in to watch. It's kind of a bummer because I think NBC could do so much better - it really should be Olympics 24/7 on their station until their conclusion. But that's just my opinion.

What I'm listening to:
I listened to this delightful podcast episode from Criminal, called The Demon Spread. It's all about how margarine was heavily regulated in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s which led to bootleg margarine suppliers and women selling margarine out of the trunks of their cars. People were arrested for selling margarine, you couldn't transport margarine over certain state lines, and butter interests lobbied to create laws that said that margarine could not be dyed yellow to look like butter; instead, it had to be sold in its natural color, white. It was a highly entertaining episode and I loved learning about Big Butter.

See you next month!
