Diane and Theo, owners of this charming blue house, are both artists, and their paintings cover the walls. It's on a lovely street, San Marco, in St. Augustine, under huge shade trees and it was a beautiful day. Sketchers were invited to sit, visit and sketch as we enjoyed our coffee - and chocolate croissant for me. We sat on the porch under a ceiling painted "haint blue," which fostered a whole discussion of blues. Haint blue is a particular shade of pale blue-green associated with the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved Africans in parts of Georgia and South Carolina, who have maintained a rich cultural heritage. Among their traditions was the belief that haint blue repels haints, or ghosts, who would be tricked into thinking the ceiling is water or the sky. Today it is more known for keeping wasps and birds away. It has been known to keep them from nesting since they believe that the blue represents the sky. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
