It's time to read that daunting book. The big one. The good news: it will fill up two squares on your Book Bingo. As a few suggestions for you, I've provided a smattering of different genres. Hopefully one of them will appeal. For even more suggestions check out our booklist Book Bingo NW 2024: One Big Book.
Let's ease in with a couple of large graphic novels. The first is set in an alternate Cairo where wishes are real. The story follows three people working on making their deepest desires come true in Shubeik Lubeik by Dīnā Muḥammad. Our Colors by Gengoroh Tagame follows the story of Sora, a teenage aspiring painter who lives in a Japanese society that does not find being gay acceptable. Sora discovers a mentor in a local coffee shop owner who is unapologetically gay and they discover just how complicated life can be.
For nonfiction, let's start with My Name Is Barbra by Barbra Streisand. Streisand gives an astonishing account of her career spanning six decades. Her friendships, political advocacy, music; being the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a motion major picture - she's done so much! Read about it from her funny, frank, and charming perspective. The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee by David Treuer explores Native American history after the Battle of Wounded Knee. In addition, he interviews Native Americans today, showing how their culture is still surviving and what they've had to do to keep it alive.
Finally, fiction. The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri is set in a world inspired by historical India. A magic-wielding maid and a captured princess must team up to change the fate of their empire. This is the first book in an epic fantasy trilogy. Meanwhile in 1902 Rhode Island, the Brookhants School for Girls closes for good after five people die on the property. It becomes the focus of the news over a century later when a writer publishes a book about the school which leads to a movie filmed on location - a location that may be haunted. Discover if it is in Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth.
As a bonus, I wanted to add in the The Iliad by Homer and recently released in a new translation by Emily Wilson. She uses loose iambic pentameter to create a lyrical retelling of a portion of the Trojan War. A great translation for modern times.
