Get ready for dahlia picking! Vallejo Street Dahlias opens their backyard farm in just a couple of weeks in Watsonville, CA. Here's what the farm looked like last year.
This was my first time going to a farm for a u-pick flower haul. I didn't know what to expect. I packed the car with toddler in tow and we literally parked on a dirt lot on someone's home property. I am so impressed by what they've created in their backyard! There were rows and rows of gorgeous blooms!
When we arrived, check in was easy. We bought our tickets a few weeks in advance but it seemed like you could pay the entry fee in person (pending how crowded the farm was when you got there). We received a dahlia picking tutorial, a pair of cutters, and a tray with tubes of water to hold our dahlia selections. Prices were by small/medium/large stems and you could pick as little or as many stems as you liked. After making our selections, they wrapped up our flowers in baggies with water. They also had vases (that I was told fit in most car cup holders) for purchase. Bringing something like a bucket to keep your dahlias upright in the car is a definite plus.
We spent maybe an hour on the farm. This was plenty of time to make stem choices, enjoy the scenery, and take tons of photos. The experience of walking among the different dahlia varieties was worth the ticket and drive. My kid also had fun frolicking and selecting flowers to pick for our bouquets. There were a few tables and benches for resting, snacking, or admiring the farm, too, plus a play area for the littles.
Highly recommend and would do again! Know of any other backyard flower farms? I'm obsessed! Name drop in the comments!
