For generations, the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt - was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artefact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has emerged to build a massive structure outside the orbit of Uranus: a gate that leads into a starless dark.
Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artefact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.

Hollis' 4 star review
Though I'd been having a good time with this series, I accidentally took a bit of a hiatus from it. And even though I liked book two, I'm really glad I came back into this world with more than just a like -- as that'll definitely encourage me to dig into a few more of these this time around. Because while things got extra-spacey in this one, with alien constructs and wormholes and dead civilizations, things also took a turn for the religious. There was also such an interesting balance of revenge and morality at play and even though I do think one of the POVs we had added into this story got a little tired near the end it didn't take away from my overall enjoyment. This one was compelling as all hell and very action packaged.
Having said that though I'm glad I watched the show first because had I not had the visual of the space station already in my head, I'm not sure I would've had a bloody clue how to picture it.
But also also having said that, I think this was the first time I could see where the show started deviating. Likely due to an abundance of new characters and lack of time, though. So much happens here and I understand why it was cut. But at the same time, it was so so good. And I'm glad to be here experiencing it.
Sadly I don't have much to add to this review and likely that is a trend that will continue as we get further into the plot but just know if you're looking for a complex space opera, one that tackles both the bigger picture and the smaller, with a variety of layered characters, competing motivations, political agendas, and all-around danger, this is definitely a series you want to get into. And a show you'll want to watch.
