Making It So is a memoir written by Sir Patrick Stewart, star of the stage, television, and movies. It begins with his early life, growing up in Northern England. Stewart became interested in acting at a young age and soon was taking acting classes and starring in local theater productions. When he was in his 20's, Stewart became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company where he starred in plays for many years. In the 1980's he moved onto Hollywood where he starred in the movie Dune. He then took on the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He added another franchise to his resume when he began playing Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies. Sir Patrick Stewart is in his 80s but that hasn't slowed him down any! He is still acting and is nowhere near retirement.
Patrick Stewart is most known to me from watching him in Star Trek: TNG. I watched that show every week when I was in high school. Jean-Luc Picard was the coolest captain and I always wanted to be on the Enterprise. I love his catchphrases of "Make it so" and "Tea, earl gray, hot". I don't know if it's because I never watched the original Star Trek show, but I always thought Picard was a better captain than Kirk, partly because of Patrick Stewart's charisma.
I didn't realize just how interesting a life he had led until I read this book. I knew that he had a humble upbringing and that he was in the Royal Shakespeare Company but I didn't realize just how many other famous people were also in the Royal Shakespeare Company. It felt like there was a lot of name-dropping in the book about who he was starring in plays with but I guess when someone has been an actor for over 60 years, you meet people and some of them are or become famous.
The book seemed kind of rushed at times and appeared to gloss over some parts. I understand that he was trying to condense 80 years into one book, but I felt like some things deserved more than a chapter. I wish he had talked more about Next Generation or the X-Men. I understand that the theater is a big part of his life but I feel like those two are what he is mainly known for.
I didn't know a lot about Stewart's personal life, so it was a bit of a bummer to read about how he had cheated on not 1, but 2, ex-wives.
I think this would be a great book to listen on audio as Patrick Stewart narrates it.
