while gathering surplus yarns to share at the guild's free table
it was a good time to do a bit of a clean up - I've got too much stuff!
I came across a box of goodies I'd completely forgotten about
oh, happy days - it's like Christmas in June
a box of kami-ito - paper thread - shifu
it has been hiding there for 10 years while I wove on with other yarns, other patterns, other ideas
an assortment of excellent Japanese paper - even some I indigo dyed
handspun paper yarn and three cones of commercially spun paper yarns - they were produced in the Philipines (no longer available) and were sent from Japan
the bottom cone is spun with 43% paper and 57% rami
it gives a nice texture to the woven shawl alternating with silk in both warp and weft
also in the box were these samples of paper yarn made using sewing patterns
these were given to me and I have never tried spinning it myself
the piece woven on a pin loom alternates the paper yarn with cotton
my student is progressing - she has finished the table runner she wanted as her main project
we put on a long enough warp to do some sampling
so- we started with hem stitching and then moved on to how to read weaving patterns
just starting a variation of log cabin from "the Handweaver's Pattern Directory" by Anne Dixon
an excellent teaching book for four harness patterns
it is always satisfying to see a new weaver get excited about learning more
