The Moon will conjunct Neptune at 4:44 am EDT on 28 June 2024. For me, in western Massachusetts, this puts the conjunction pretty close to the midheaven, which means (if I bother to get up from my bed) I should be able to see a waning gibbous-to-half moon... and thanks to a declination check, it looks like the Moon's disk will actually hide Neptune.
Should there be a poem for the event? Probably. Maybe something like this one, that I wrote today.
Moon conjunct Neptune in Pisces
Hail, Lady Moon, among undines gleaming,
sky reflected in a funhouse mirror.
From your eyes, empathy's tears are streaming —
your family's heartaches are so much dearer
to you, than all of Ocean's salty spray!
Soaking up the turmoil and trouble
of all relations, and Earth's own dying,
you flee to Night's dreaming, and quit the day!
You planned to drink less, but pour out double,
and everyone thinks you're wrong, or lying.
Waves crash on rocks, and climb the sandy beach:
you imagine sex in some sheltered coves.
but every fantasy is out of reach;
There's children here, and crowds have come in droves
and cluster on blankets above high tide.
The wind picks up sand and flings sharp stinging
that hurt the skin; and we suck up harsh words
like a whale that opens its mouth too wide
and takes in plastic that chokes its singing.
We shield our picnic from dive-bombing birds.
Everyone is red as we head for the shade,
All vicious, angry, and misunderstood —
We thought we were called, to swim and to wade,
but all our advice has done nothing good.
Lady Moon, hear us, and give us some ease,
a shelter from tempests that others called—
from the turbulence that roars all around!
There's always some storm that none can appease,
affairs or disputes that leave us appalled...
help me know my limits: my lane, and bound.
We have a word for when a planet passes directly in front of the Sun, or behind it, in astrology: cazimi, which usually refers either to Mercury or Venus. It comes from Arabic, and it's such a fun word to say.
But what's the word for when the Moon gathers a planet into her own diameter? I know we have occultation.... but this feels even more intimate than that. Embracement? Since the Moon is connected with motherhood and with childhood, and parent-child relationships, maybe that idea of the Moon embracing another planet, like an older mother embracing an adult child, is the right framing here. It's probably much more common than a cazimi — and it feels like it should have a special term.
This conjunction also ends a different condition, called Enclosure or Besiegement, when a planet that is normally favorable is trapped between two planets that are normally thought of as neutral or malicious. The Moon will be similarly trapped for most of the afternoon and evening of July 1, and into July 2, between Mars and Uranus in Taurus — you can expect a somewhat explosive day when it's difficult to find your emotional center.
