Poem: Mercury conjunct Jupiter

Andrew

June 3

June 4, 2024 isn't just the date of a Venus cazimi — it's also the date of a Jupiter-Mercury conjunction, also in Gemini. This one occurs at 6:20 am EDT, with Mercury in an unusually powerful position over Jupiter — the herald-planet is in their domicile, term, triplicity and joy. Yet Jupiter, despite normally being in detriment in Gemini, is not without his own power and potential here, since he's in his own term — The Apple of Eden — and also functioning as one of the triplicity co-magistrates in Gemini. It's an unusual bit of co-sovereignty for both of them. If they were both gay (and what planets can be said not to be, in the month of June?) — it looks a bit like the relationship between a young twink and an older bear, normally co-equal but doing some role-reversed Dom/sub play as they march in the Pride Parade, just for fun. Will it continue once they get home? For a little while, perhaps — but we shouldn't expect an ongoing commitment to the bit.

Hymn: conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter

Hail, dazzl'ng Mercury, rainbow envoy,
voguing with peacock brilliance in the street,
with Jupiter traipsing in your convoy —
gladdening the spirits of all you meet!
It's hard to say who's normally in charge
when each of you defers so prettily.
One struts in sunlight unwilling to hide;
another in elder dignity strides.
This one's old enough to be titled "sarge",
but moves with officer's solidity —
or in committees, too often presides.

This other's a youth, of gender obscure,
fluttering with swagger, glitter, and drape,
flirting and teasing with motives impure,
wings on ankles, in iridescent cape.
You'd know for sure who bought dinner and drinks,
if you saw them in a restaurant or pub —
the old guy's the lawyer with a career.
But he cares too much what some stranger thinks,
and so for today he follows the cub,
unbuttons his shirt, and chokes back his fear...

Oh! Great Jove, humbled in Mercury's wake,
we marvel at how Law and Tradition
swiftly abandon old dreams, and awake
to loosen the chains of inhibition —
For happiness might come to those who seek
along such new paths cut by pioneers —
even leaders at times must fall in line.
Their first footfalls stamp tentative and weak,
but then new confidence slowly appears,
and freedom fills their eyes like light divine!

On a more personal level, Robert Hand in Planets in Transit thought that this was a good transit for opening your heart and mind to new possibilities and new potentials. You can dive deep into the details but also see the big picture today, and new points of view are less threatening to your identity — instead, they help you take a step into a larger universe. That said, your biggest risks are sloppy thought-processes, either by getting so mired in details that you forget the big picture, or so big-minded that you forget the details: Be optimistic about results today, but remember to tick off items on your checklist once you've done them, not just thought about it.
