The tan Filofax York Personal was in the catalogues 1993 to 1998. It is one of my favourite Filofaxes and I have written it before – one can never have too many of them!
So here are my three Yorkshiremen. From left to right - a late version with light brown popper, embossed model information and "Filofax Filofax" on the binder-cover, then a mid-production with dark brown popper, embossed information and "F" on the binder – and lastly an early version with dark brown popper, gold printed information and "F". They are all made in Italy.
They are the same size – there is some distortion by the mobile camera.
Here is a comparison between the early gold printed version and the late embossed version. Note the popper colours and the binder cover differences.
The late version I got from Janet (thanks again!) and it looked quite thirsty for some leather care. The exterior has a very nice articulated grain to it – and as you will see it probably was made from a different leather than the older ones.
Took it apart. There are "how to" instructions all over Youtube and I do not want to bore you with yet another one.
Let the fun begin! As I mentioned earlier it looked thirsty – and I have never seen anything like it. I just soaked up whatever I put on. It got darker and darker, and I must say prettier and prettier! In the end I had to stop further treatment as I started to worry about the stiffening material inside getting soaked and deformed.
Let us do the before and after comparison!
This leads me to believe the late version was made of another kind of leather. The heavier grain and how open the leather is to receive leather care products are clues to this. It was probably, at the time, considered a lesser quality than the finer grained and differently treated earlier versions. Do not get me wrong – the earlier leathers are also "open" to treatment – they are not of the plastic covered and coloured leathers of even later years.
These three have all got the same treatment with natural content leather products, by me, but has reacted very differently to it. And as some may believe from an ancient book – the last shall be first and the first shall be last actually come thru as true in this case. Even if I have owned the gold letter York since new this last addition to the York family now comes first in my book…
The others looking pale and somewhat uninteresting when compared to the livelier and more colourful newcomer! It has been around the block, it is a bit rough - but scores very high in personality and presence.
