It's really DOWN UNDER - down under a BRIDGE! It's in Fernandina, but you'll need a map (or GPS). Not many people made the trip today, but those that did felt like it was definitely worth it. It's a happy place with good food and a history going back over 100 years. The land was originally Piney Island where in 1923 sap was harvested from pine trees for the turpentine industry. Since then, it was an oyster house, a fish camp and boat dock. "In the early 1980's an old fish camp on the property was remodeled as a restaurant, and in 1982 the Down Under was opened. Their unique location offers an ambiance of marina wildlife that includes a variety of birds and other fascinating creatures including Alligators, Manatees, Sea Otters, Dolphins, Sea Turtles, Tarpon and many, many more. So sit back and enjoy a little piece of Fernandina's history, you never know who or what you may see floating down the river." (from the website) There are many whimsical nautical things to look at too which made it so much fun for us. The seafood was great and our server, Caitlin, made our visit very enjoyable. Do yourself a favor: go Down Under. Mary Owen Jo Sumara | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
