Every two years MAMA in Albury overseas a national photography prize. I had not made it before and walked in uninformed. My expectation was almost a general version of the wildlife photography shows except with a wider brief. This was much more challenging and ultimately more engaging. Artists are selected and present a portfolio of works to explore interesting issues of photography. One work is a huge collage of hundreds of pictures taken out of magazines to highlight the disconnected nature of much photography. Other works challenge the viewer to deconstruct highly constructed images. One entrant plays around with a collection of curved glass objects to reflect on the place of light and lenses in photography.
Early in my walk through I was grumpy, but as understanding dawned I got more and more excited about the challenge this exhibition was posing. A photograph as a moment speaks both beyond and inside itself. Many ask more questions about beyond its frame while others engross with questions about what and how. I have rarely been more stimulated by an exhibition and thought about it after my visit. I loved this.
