Chloe Sevre is your typical college freshman, except for the fact that she's also a psychopath. Chloe is one of seven students taking part in a clinical study at her school aimed at understanding and learning more about psychopaths. For Chloe, it's an extra boon that the study is taking place at the same school that Will Bachman attends, a boy from Chloe's past whom she has set out to kill. When one of the students in the study is found murdered in the psychology building, all the students become on edge. When a second student is murdered, Chloe realizes that someone is hunting the participants in the study, which puts a real drag on her plans for Will. While trying to figure out who the killer is, and also putting into motion her own plans to kill Will, Chloe's freshman year will be quite a ride.
I did not expect to enjoy this book about a college-age psychopath so much. The humor was dark at times and I still don't know who I was rooting for - Chloe? Will? The killer?
There are a lot of interesting characters - Charles, a student in the study who is trying to change his ways and lead a "normal" life, Andre, a student who is faking his psychopath diagnosis in order to benefit from free tuition, and Will, your typical frat boy. The story is told from different points of view as we follow different characters. I thought this added more to the story, otherwise, how would we have learned that Andre was faking his diagnosis, but I didn't think it was essential to the plot. I would have gladly read an entire book from Chloe's perception.
I didn't necessarily find Chloe to be a likable character, even when you find out her backstory and her reasons for wanting to kill Will, but I did find her compelling. I think I liked the first half of the book more because it was more about Chloe and her revenge plot, whereas her scheme kind of gets lost in the second half because of the other killer storyline.
It seems like people either love this book or think it is outlandish. I personally, liked it a lot.
