Here is the novel that will be forever considered Frank Herbert's triumph of the imagination.
Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the "spice" melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for....
When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul's family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined. And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.
A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

Leadership
Differs in parts to film
Time jumps
I wonder why I'm reviewing this, what can I have to add to the many reviews of this sci-fi classic? But I guess I can give my experience of watching films 1 & 2 first then reading the books after. Obviously, the first thing is that I had great visualisation while reading, including all the cast. The sandscape, worms and planet were so well described.
Paul Atreides was a bigger character than I expected, probably due to the long time period this book is set over. Paul starts at 15 and ends at an age I'm unsure of, but he accomplished much and showed such leadership of the Fremen; he wasn't a boy for long. Jessica was less insidious and the Baron was also less evil than the films. Those licences for the film were good calls, I think.
I found Paul's sister interesting and I definitely want to see more of her, hopefully in the next book. Chani was totally different in characterisation, weaker, more in the background but there was a solid and unwavering connection between Paul and Chani. I'm intrigued how the events at the end of this book will play out and affect their relationship. I'm looking forward to carrying on.
The full cast audio was superb.
I can't resist leaving on the note that everything Star Wars has to be based on this world and Herbert's writing and conceptualisation. There's too much coincidence and similarity for it not to be. Herbert deserves all the kudos.
