Marni Tote Honest Review

April 29

One of the more disappointing breakdowns, because I really loved using this bag. We happened to score this Marni soft tote several years ago in the outlet. I think La Vallee in Paris, if I'm not mistaken, for only around 600 or so euros? Might've even been less than that haha.

Anyway, it had periods of heavy usage and periods of being stored away, but generally it was a good size and was very functional/ practical for casual everyday use.

Early on, this piece of hardware on the side came off. It was because the screws had come loose. Not a tragedy. I simply ripped the stitches off of a small section of the fabric lining in order to access the back of the hardware, and found the fallen screws caught in the space between the exterior leather and interior lining. I was able to screw them back on and sew up the lining once again.

As you can see in the above photo, this bag also has the "fatal stitch", or the point at which the bag is most likely to rip, due to a load-bearing handle or strap being attached to the bag body via a set of small horizontal stitches (that will eventually, with enough force, act as a perforation line, basically). This was early in my bag-making days, so I wasn't quite as aware about such dangers back then haha

The zipper puller, as you can see from the photos above, broke apart as well. This was a more recent development, when the bag was used after having been in storage for a few years. The leather has become very brittle.

While the edge finish was not great to begin with (just oh-k), they did start to split and crack with use as well. This does not affect the practical use of the bag, and is more aesthetic than anything, but it's also a big job to repair, because it will mean basically having to take the bag apart to clean up and then reapply all those edges.

As for the leather of the bag body, it's showing less wear and tear than the handles and straps, just some discoloration. It has a bit of a coating, so that probably helped some, but I imagine that given a few more years and some more use, it may also be headed to splitsville haha

I initially had my eye on the Marni Trunk, but given our experience with this, we are less sure about spending too much for it. If I can find it for a similar price (less than 800€ or so), I think then it might be worth trying, but honestly, not in any hurry to find it haha.
