For World Book Day this year, I thought I would just pop in to share some of the costumes Minishine and Babybows have chosen over the years, and the books behind them!
2015 - The Tiger Who Came To Tea by Judith Kerr
We start with a classic from my childhood that Minishine also adored - Sophie from The Tiger Who Came To Tea. We even had a pot of Tiger Food on standby but luckily (or sadly!) didn't need it.
The classic picture book story of Sophie and her extraordinary teatime guest has been loved by millions of children since it was first published more than fifty years ago. Now an award-winning animation!
The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy are sitting down to tea. Who could it possibly be? What they certainly don't expect to see at the door is a big furry, stripy tiger!
This warm and funny picture book story is perfect for reading aloud, or for small children to read to themselves time and again. First published in 1968 and never out of print, it has become a timeless classic enjoyed and beloved by generations of children.
We skipped a couple of years (due to Babybow's arrival and other madness!) but came back strong with another childhood classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A joint effort this year, with both a hungry apple-munching caterpillar and a beautiful butterfly!
Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a perennial favourite with children and adults alike. Its imaginative illustration and clever cut-out detail charts the progress of a very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week.
2019 - The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton and Meg & Mog by Helen Nicoll
In 2019 Minishine chose to go as Silkie from the Faraway Tree books. This whole series from Enid Blyton remains one of Minishine's favourites to this day and she often chooses them for her bedtime audiobook.
Babybows chose to be Mog from the Meg & Mog books by Helen Nicoll. We have the whole collection of these paperbacks, lovingly cherished by Minishine and then passed down to be equally treasured by Babybows. Meg, Mog and Og and Mog at the Zoo were always particular favourites!
When Joe, Beth and Frannie move to the countryside, they discover that their new house lies next to the Enchanted Wood! And in that wood stands the Magic Faraway Tree. This is no ordinary tree - it is home to more magical lands full of elves, pixies, talking creatures and wonderful adventures than the children ever imagined possible!
Join the children and their new friends Moon-Face, Saucepan Man and Silky the Fairy as they explore this most magical of all fairytale worlds in the three original Magic Faraway Tree novels by beloved author Enid Blyton.
In this bestselling and timeless story, Meg and Mog are off to a Halloween party with all of their friends. But, BANG! One of Meg's spells hasn't worked as planned!
Can Meg and Mog fix it?
Packed with Jan Pienkowski's award-winning illustrations and Helen Nicoll's easy to read text, this timeless story is the perfect book for young readers.
2020 - The Gruffalo and Stick Man, both by Julia Donaldson
2020 was a very Julia Donaldson reading year, with Minishine choosing to be the clever mouse from The Gruffalo and Babybows electing to be (a rather terrifying representation of) Stick Man.
There isn't a single Julia Donaldson / Axel Sheffler book that my two don't love - a modern classic team in children's picture books!
"A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood. A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good."
Walk further into the deep dark wood, and discover what happens when a quick-witted mouse comes face to face with an owl, a snake . . . and a hungry Gruffalo!
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's The Gruffalo is an undisputed modern classic and has become a best-selling phenomenon across the world with over 13.5 million copies sold. This award-winning rhyming story of a mouse and a monster has found its way into the hearts and bedtimes of an entire generation of children and will undoubtedly continue to enchant children for years and years to come. No home should be without The Gruffalo!
'Stick Man lives in the family tree With his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three.'
But it's dangerous being a Stick Man.
A dog wants to play with him, a swan builds her nest with him. He even ends up on a fire!
Will he ever get back to the family tree in time for Christmas? Perhaps Santa can help...
2021: Me and Mister P by Maria Farrer and The Gingerbread Man retold by Alan MacDonald
Ah the joys of a lockdown World Book Day! This was the year we not only dressed up but made potato character companions.
Minishine chose to be Mister P the polar bear and made a skateboarding potato Ruby for her co-character, while Babybows went with his favourite Ladybird tale of the Gingerbread Man and made himself a potato fox that kept trying to eat him all up!
There are times when only a polar bear will do . . .
Our flat isn't big, but at least it's high up. I can stand on the balcony and look up at the stars. I reckon Dad's out there somewhere looking up too. And I bet he's thinking about me. I do love Mum and Leo but it's hard work looking after both of them and sometimes I wish things were a bit easier.
What's NOT easy is a ridiculous, annoying, in-your-face, POLAR BEAR moving in! I mean, what use is HE going to be? I've tried to get rid of him, but he seems very determined to stay . . .
Meet Ruby, and her new (kind of) friend, Mister P . . . the world's most helpful(ish) polar bear!
Packed with gorgeous illustrations throughout, this is a story full of humour and heart which will appeal to readers everywhere.
A retelling of The Gingerbread Man for early readers from Ladybird.
Based on the traditional fairy tale The Gingerbread Man, this vibrantly illustrated story is sure to become a favourite in every home. Follow the gingerbread man as he tries to escape all manner of hungry animals and people! This hardback book contains lots of funny rhythm and rhyme to delight young children. Ideal for reading aloud and sharing with 2-4 year olds
This book is part of Ladybirds First Favourite Tales series - these retellings are perfect for introducing young children to classic stories and fairy tales, and the books are just right for those just learning to read.
2022: Mirabelle series by Harriet Muncaster & Supertato series by Sue Hendra
This was the year Minishine began her long-term obsession with the books of Harriet Muncaster, creator of Isadora Moon, Mirabelle, Emerald and Victoria Stitch. Minishine elected to be Mirabelle because although she likes all the characters, Mirabelle 'gets to be a little bit naughtier!'
Meanwhile Babybows was (and still is) in love with Supertato, with it's superhero parody style and veggie puns.
Mirabelle's mum is a witch, her dad is a fairy, and she is a bit of both!
Beautifully illustrated in two colour, this new series of chapter books introduces Isadora Moon's cousin! Meet Mirabelle, half witch, half fairy and totally naughty... There will be spells, there will be flying but mostly there will be mischief!
Meet Supertato! He's always there for you when the chips are down. He's the supermarket superhero with eyes everywhere - but now there's a pea on the loose. A very, very naughty pea. Has Supertato finally met his match?
2023: Mirabelle series by Harriet Muncaster & Dog Man series by Dav Pilkey
Minishine's obsession with Harriet Muncaster and Mirabelle endures for another World Book Day but Babybows has switched his allegiance from picture books to comic books and the awesome and very popular Dog Man series in particular.
New from the creators of Captain Underpants, it's Dog Man, the crime-biting canine who is part dog, part man, and ALL COP!
George and Harold have created a new hero who digs into deception, claws after crooks, and rolls over robbers. When Greg the police dog and his cop companion are injured on the job, a life-saving surgery changes the course of history, and Dog Man is born. With the head of a dog and the body of a human, this heroic hound has a real nose for justice. But can he resist the call of the wild to answer the call of duty?
This new series from Dav Pilkey may use conventional spelling but it is still full of all the same humour and fun of George and Harold's previous graphic novels!
2024: Victoria Stitch series by Harriet Muncaster & Bunny Vs Monkey series by Jamie Smart
Which brings us up-to-date with today's costumes!
Minishine is still sticking faithfully to Harriet Muncaster but has moved on to the Victoria Stitch series in audiobook and paperback, while Babybows still adores Dog Man but has added the whole of Jamie Smart's Bunny vs Monkey series to his must-read-daily list! Of course, he chose to be the 'baddie' of the two characters, although Skunky the inventor is his favourite character (personally, I like Le Fox!).
I can't wait to see what they're reading next year!
'The crystal keeper gazed around him at the shards of impure crystal, glittering furiously on the floor, and shivered with a terrible sense of foreboding.'
Twins, Victoria Stitch and Celestine, are denied their royal birth-right. Celestine accepts the decision with good grace, but Victoria Stitch is consumed with her obsession for power.
The twins are like moonlight and sunshine - could it be possible to break free of the role you have been given, rewrite your story, and change your own destiny?
Since he crash-landed to Earth in a rocket, Monkey has been causing absolute mayhem! Bunny and the gang (Squirrel, Pig [the Pig], Action Beaver, and Skunky the Inventor) have almost had enough. In this rollicking comic extravaganza, the pint-sized friends must tackle a helliphant, rocket-powered hot air balloons, and the most mind-boggling creatures of all . . . hew-mans . . .
Jamie's art and storytelling fizz with exuberance - the pages turn themselves in this addictive collection of stories.
