Why look at art, of course. Last weekend was beautiful weather (unlike this whole week) and I treated my visiting friend to an excursion to the Isola S. Georgia Maggiore, one of the small islands in the lagoon just south of the Piazza S.Marco. It is always my intention to avoid tourist traffic as much as possible and we could take a back route vaporetto to get there.
Two Biennale di Architectura ago, the Vatican commissioned 10 international architects to design and install chapels in the woodland park that adjoins that church. For me it is a delightful escape into greenery and serenity that I often need living here in Venezia.
The Vatican participated in the Biennale of Architecture for the first time in 2018. Ten international architects were chosen to create sacred space in the park adjoining the S. Gregorio Maggiore church located on its own island in the Venetian Lagoon.

Participating architects came from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, USA, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Chile/Serbia and Paraguay. They were tasked with designing and building chapels inspired by the work of Gunnar Asplund, a Swedish architect from the early 20th century who emphasized the interaction of earth, sky and water in his designs.
The chapels range from earthy to literally seeming out of this world. All nestle in the woodland adjacent to the church offering a unique variety of spiritual expression. here is a small sample.
