An account of the 2024 winners of the Fereday Prize in Orkney schools. "In first place for Stromness Academy was Hayley Stanger with her project, titled: Balfour Hospital 6.7.44 – A Previously Unpublished Poem by George Mackay Brown. ¶ Utilising this little-known work by one of Orkney's most famous authors, Hayley created what the judges called a 'remarkable historical investigation' which sought out the members of staff mentioned in the poem. ¶ Her work took her to Orkney Library and Archives, the National Archives of Scotland and private family collections. She also conducted interviews with people who knew the staff, as well as using social media in her work."
