the Japanese gardens at Royal Roads are magnificent at any time of year
designed and built by Isaburo Kishida in 1910

Japanese Gardens Revitalization
there is a major revitalization underway with a new tea house
a very brief history...
Hatley Castle was built on the site by James Dunsmuir in 1908 as a private family residence
Hatley Park is a National Historic Site
in 1941 it was purchased by the Canadian government and became Royal Roads Military College and continued as such until 1994
the government of British Columbia took over the extensive grounds in 1995 and it became Royal Roads University
when it was a Military College the housekeeper in the castle was a friend of my Mother's - we went to visit occasionally when I was young
in 2001, the annual Garden show was held on the grounds
daughter-in-law Kathy and I went with 6 week old Carrie in her pram/push-chair
in 2016 grandson Iain designed and built a small Japanese garden for a high school project
I was the assistant and we visited several Japanese gardens in Victoria
one of several bridges in the gardens
it was difficult to keep page 9 to the 15 minutes a day time frame
the rose garden is all out of proportion but it was fun to stitch
lower right shows the cherry blossom garden and above it the location of the formal Italian garden
it is stitched with thrums and short skeins of embroidery floss which my Mother kept on scrappy pieces of cardboard
they will keep me going for several more years
this is getting a bit crazy - where next?
