10 Things You Already Know

Rachel Hazell

March 29

Thinking about this month's book review "On Purpose" prompted this bookart project: 10 Things You Already Know. We have so much wisdom inside us already, that it's easy to overlook. So here's a way to make a physical reminder!

Since the previous project - How To Be Blue - was such a hit, let's continue with a colour theme...

While my examples are less about purpose and rather homilies to live by, you can choose what ten things you want to keep front and centre in your mind. And assign a colour to each phrase.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: You'll need

You'll need:

  • A wide strip of thick paper (I've used a 14cm high strip of cartridge paper that's 42cm wide. Roughly 6 inches by 16 inches)
  • Something to write with
  • 10 colours

Step by step:

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: Fold in half

Fold your strip into six even-ish sections. Start by folding in half.

I guestimated. So can you.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: In thirds

Then divide the top half into thirds.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: Half done

Ready to do the other side?

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: Folded in to six

The front and back sides are the covers.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: Title

Add the title now.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: Blurb

And 'the blurb.'

Then number the inner pages 1 - 10. I've got 1 - 6 on one side, and 7 - 10 on the other.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: First two pages

My first truth to live by is: The harder you work the luckier you get. And the second is: Keep learning

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: Pages three and four

Here's three and four: Come back to the breath. You can do anything but you can't do everything.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: 7 and 8

And seven and eight: Need a shift? Move your body. People smile back.

Six and seven not pictured: Take a brolly and it won't rain. You can be right or you can be happy.

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: 9 and 10

Finally: Stay curious. Be kind

The Travelling Bookbinder: 10 Things You Already Know: Finished book

I'm going to put this where I can see it!

What have you written in yours?

And will you send it to someone? Or keep it?

The coloured pencils are Faber Castell Jumbo Grip and Stabilo 'Woody'. The fountain pen is by Ferris Wheel Press, from Meticulous Ink.
