Acting Town Manager Albert W. Thompson told the Selectmen Tuesday night that Engineers for the Mass. Department of Public Works are working on the construction plans for the extension of Nahatan Street from Pleasant Street to the State Highway.
The construction, Thompson said, is based on an 80-foot layout with a 50-foot macadam roadway surface and a ten-foot grass plot and five-foot sidewalk on each side.
Thompson explained that the state will participate only in grading the full width and 50-foot roadway surfacing and the cost of the grass-plot sidewalks and curbing will have to be paid by the Town. He said this is usual on Chapter 90 work.
"Their allocation for $34,000 was based on tire grading and roadway work and before they go ahead with the final plans they wish to know if the Town wishes to go ahead with the other work," Thompson informed the Board This additional work will cost approximately $17,000 in which the State will not participate.
"The original town request was for S40,000 from the State and the Commissioner agreed on the State contribution of $40,000."
Thompson said that while it was contrary to the State's policy on Chapter 90 work, he would like to suggest that the Board contact the Chairman of the Commission to see if they would come in on the rest of the work on the extension. The Selectmen were in accord with Thompson's suggestion.
