In 2010 I got this meme, I think from Boston Bibliophile. It was a fun way to summarize the year, so I now do it every year.
How many books read in 2023? 79
How many fiction and non fiction? 39 fiction and 40 nonfiction. I would have assumed last year would be more skewed, and not so evenly split! I don't usually read the same number of novels unless I'm in a book club which I'm currently not.
Male/Female author ratio? 30 men to 48 women, and 1 undetermined.
Favorite book of 2023? Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree
Least favorite book? I Must Be Dreaming. I like Roz Chast but as someone who almost never dreams myself, this was just... weird.
Any that you simply couldn't finish and why? Many! That's a hazard in my line of work and doesn't always mean bad things about the book so I'm not going to name them.
Oldest book read? Love Is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time by Rob Sheffield, which published in 2007.
Newest? The Great Cool Ranch Dorito in the Sky by Josh Galarza, which doesn't publish until July 23, 2024
Longest and shortest book titles? (not including subtitles) Longest: Every Time I Go on Vacation, Someone Dies
Shortest: BFF
Longest and shortest books? Longest: Witch King by Martha Wells at 424 pages
Shortest: not counting audiobooks, that would be I Must Be Dreaming by Roz Chast, at 128 pages.
How many books from the library? 30 all audiobooks
How many audiobooks? 32
How many graphic books? 10
Any translated books? 2

Favorite character of the year? Hera the cat from Starter Villain.
Which countries did you go to through the page in your year of reading? United States, England, Italy, Australia, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Spain, Brazil, Chile, and Romania.

Surely You Can't Be Serious: The True Story of Airplane! from my colleague Melissa, Redshirts from my sister Laura, Listen for the Lie from my colleague Kara, STFU from my buyer Kelly, Prima Facie from my buyer Emilie, Here for It and Congratulations, the Best is Over! from my friend Tabitha, The Sunset Years of Agnes Sharp from my friend Michael, and Murder Your Employer from my buyer Ellen.
Which author was new to you in 2023 that you now want to read the entire works of? John Scalzi
Which books are you annoyed you didn't read? More John Scalzi
How many books did you read for work? 49 plus I read 7 Macmillan backlist titles. Not exactly for work, not exactly not for work.
Did you read any books you have always been meaning to read? not this year!
2023 TOP THREE Book Events in Carin's Book Life (this used to be 8 but that was always very difficult to do, and is more so since I have a steady job and am no longer on the WNBA board):
1. Hoping not to jinx myself but my last season of selling books (Winter 2024) felt normal again. Like 2019. Hope that keeps up!
2. Finally went to a trade show again! SIBA and NAIBA combined for a big single show, which was great.
3. This was my first full year with only 1.5 bookcases and... it's fine! In fact, I might cull further. It's such a relief to not have all those hundreds of unread books breathing down my back.
